What You Need To Succeed

What To Study:  101 Fields in a Flash (Kaplan Educational Centers and Simon & Schuster, 1997) tells liberal arts students and graduates "what you need to succeed" in their chosen fields.

Advertising:  "Creativity and a grasp of technology are two important attributes for success."  On-campus opportunities include ad sales for college publications, and fundraising.

African-American Studies:  "A cornerstone of African-American studies is an interest in - and concern for - the roles African-Americans play in contemporary society and how their past roles shape the present."  On-campus opportunities include admissions/recruiting and research assistantships.

American Studies and Culture:  "Analytical and writing skills and a willingness to read voraciously are essential because you'll be exploring differences and commonalities, trying to distill themes that can improve Americans' understanding of each other and the world."  On-campus opportunities include campus museum docent/guide and research assistantships.

Asian Languages and Cultures:  "You need an open mind [including] enthusiasm for stepping over disciplinary lines so you can visualize connections between a society's music, theater, literature, political systems, economics, educational institutions, and family relations."  On-campus opportunities include the international student center or study-abroad programs office and translating for foreign visitors.
