Asked & Answered

What sort of jobs do you recommend for someone graduating with an M.A in English?
Depends on the candidate.  Anything from book publishing to technical editing.  Advertising,
journalism, writing for textbooks, things like that.
How about history or political science?
That's easier because they've got what employers are looking for:  research capabilities, as well
as analytical, written, verbal and presentation skills.

What skills are important for a liberal arts graduate?
Over and over again we hear that written and verbal communication skills are very high on the
list for employers; leadership skills are always mentioned as important. Today, problem solving
and analytical skills are very important. Familiarity with computers is important--they want
people to be comfortable with them... [And] a global outlook, ability to deal with many
different types of people, multicultural skills and then strong interpersonal skills are extremely
     important.
What are some of the hot fields to go into right now?
[Our] students go into a broad range of fields, being a liberal arts college... In the most recent
one-year-out survey that we have, 99 percent of our students were either employed or in
graduate or professional school within one year after graduation. And there were a huge range
of fields, from social service, communications, non profit, science, research, to music, dance,
and theater. You wouldn't find them listed in many journals as hot occupations, but people can
fulfill their dreams if they are persistent and try to do it, because what's hot today might not be
hot a year or two from now.
